What is Ceylon Cinnamon?

Cinnamon is a common spice used in every kitchen across the globe. Its unlikely to have not heard about the delicious flavor of cinnamon. And who doesnt love cinnamon rolls?

While most of us relate cinnamon with a delicious flavor and strong aroma, few of us know that this wonder spice has medicinal properties as well. This spice has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, as a food preservative, and as a means to enhance the taste of food. Few suggest that it dates to ancient Egypt in 2000 BC. There is evidence that it was used in the Biblical era as well.

It is widely used because of its health benefits and high antioxidant content. It gets the distinct smell and taste of the tree it grows from.

The Cinnamon we use is the bark of Cinnamomum tree. This bark has many compounds which give it medicinal properties. When branches of the Cinnamomum tree are cut, the inner bark is extracted after removing the woody parts; this inner bark gives us cinnamon. Upon drying, the strips roll to give the shape we are so used to see.
